Alcmene : why such a name ?
Mother of Heracles and wife of Amphitryon, Alcmene is above all a fascinating woman because of her human greatness. The statement of belief set out below brings together several themes dear to the composer, who is moreover planning an opera devoted to this character.
Jean Giraudoux: Amphitryon 38, Act II, Scene 2
Dialogue between ALCMENE, who believes she is speaking to her husband, and JUPITER, who has taken on Amphitryon’s appearance in order to seduce her:
JUPITER: Have you never wished to be a goddess, or almost a goddess?
ALCMENE: Certainly not. What for?
JUPITER: To be honored and revered by all.
ALCMENE: I am so as a simple woman; that is more deserving.
JUPITER: To have a lighter body, to walk upon the air, upon the waters.
ALCMENE: That is what every wife does, weighed down by a good husband.
JUPITER: To understand the reasons of things, of other worlds.
ALCMENE: The neighbors have never interested me.
JUPITER: Then, to be immortal!
ALCMENE: Immortal? What for? What use is that?
JUPITER: What do you mean, what use! Why, not to die!
ALCMENE: And what shall I do if I do not die?
JUPITER: You will live forever, dear Alcmene, transformed into a star; you will shimmer in the night until the end of the world.
ALCMENE: Which will happen?
JUPITER: Never.
ALCMENE: Charming evening! And you, what will you do?
JUPITER: A voiceless shadow, dissolved in the mists of hell, I shall rejoice to think that my wife blazes up there, in the dry air.
ALCMENE: You usually prefer pleasures that are better shared… No, my dear, let the gods not count on me for that office… Besides, the night air does nothing for my fair complexion… How cracked and worn I would be, at the depths of eternity!
JUPITER: But how cold and vain you would be, in the depths of death!
ALCMENE: I do not fear death. It is the stake of life. Since your Jupiter, rightly or wrongly, created death on earth, I stand in solidarity with my star. I feel my fibers too closely continuing those of other men, of animals, even of plants, not to share their fate. Do not speak to me of not dying so long as there is not a single immortal vegetable. To become immortal is to betray, for a human being. Besides, when I think of the great rest that death will give to all our little fatigues, to our second-rate troubles, I am grateful to it for its fullness, even its abundance… To have fretted for sixty years over badly dyed clothes, poorly prepared meals, and finally to have death, the constant, level death—that is a reward beyond all proportion… Why do you suddenly look at me with such respect?
JUPITER: Because you are the first truly human being I have ever encountered…
