Note by the composer

The Contes à rebours were composed for flutist Sandrine Tilly and percussionist Jean-Sébastien Borsarello to fit into a programme including Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye.

The homage-reference, however, takes on the appearance of a radical counterpoint, because everything is reversed: the form (the five pieces of the original work are linked in retrograde, from the fifth to the first), the tempi (what was fast becomes slow, and vice versa), the nuances (what was strong becomes soft, and vice versa), etc.

The result is a work where the Ravelian elements are sometimes quite recognizable, other times very difficult to identify.
